The Los Angeles Peace March – Jan 11, 2003

Yessss,
Oh what a thrill to be amongst the thousands, the
brothers and sisters, the fan of colors and ages, the individual ways of
expressing outrage against the sad and nasty war that impends. Little Chicano
children in sing-song voices, chanting “mas escuelas, no guerras”, a
two-toned couple, covered in full-bloomed, multicolored roses, a deeply musical,
wild “marching band”, with all kinds of horns and drums, some made
of plastic True Value plastic buckets, makeshift, inspiring dervish dances or
loud unison chants from all who venture nearby. Big Aztec-esque dances with
headdresses and bright golden breast plates, organized by GALBO, the
Venezuela-solidarity group also known by a sea of red berets. Bread and circusy
puppets high in the air , you could look up their skirts. FREE FOOD , bagels,
cream cheese, and teas served from a bike-powered cart, by Food Not Bombs,
Darlin’ octogenarians from Sunset Hall with wide, wily smiles. So many
signs, handmade- “Osama bin Forgotten”, “War Is Good for
Business, Invest Your Kids, ” “The World Needs LOve” ,
“The Only Bush I Trust is my Own”,” Oh, and all the hugs from
friends, some long-lost, some brand new-made... Emotions ran the complete gamut:
abject joy, wonder, tiredness, wiredness, fury, quiet repose, and plenty of Love
from and for all these fellows who realize that there’s GOT to be a better
way than to bomb first, ask questions later. Next time, we’ll number more.
After all, we’re part of The Human Movement, the world movement towards
Peace. M
