Venice Progressives To Hold Nominating Convention, May 15
A meeting to select candidates for the upcoming
neighborhood council elections will be held at the Oakwood Recreation Center
from 11am to 2pm, Saturday, May 15.
In the previous Grass Roots Venice
Neighborhood Council (GRVNC) election the progressive slate was successful in
campaigning and electing candidates on a platform that included affordable
housing, community control of development, and preserving diversity in
Venice.
In the election last year,
progressives won 10 out of 10 seats on the council. This year’s election,
in which 13 seats will be contested, will be held June 27 at Westminster
school.
This is the third election for
the GRVNC since it was certified in 2002. The neighborhood council system is
part of the Los Angeles city charter reform which is passed by voters in 1998.
It is viewed by some as an extension of democracy within the city, and by others
as a ploy to head off secession in restive
communities.
In the past elections, the
progressive slate has been opposed by another slate, which the first election
was called Groovnik and in the second election, Team Venice. It is not know
whether they will contest the upcoming
election.
The progressive slate is
inviting prospective candidates to seek their endorsement. To do so a candidate
should fill out a questionnaire and send it in by May 7. The questionnaire can
be obtained on the web <www.venice-progres sives.org> or
<venice-progressives@earthlink .net>, or by calling 280-3411.
