Beachhead: What women have been
most influential in your life?
Knowles: My ancestors. My ancestors came
out of the piny woods in Macon, Mississippi. They came here to California in the
early forties and bought land here in the Baldwin Hills area, and the Venice
area, and the Santa Monica/Palisades area. Those women, those are my idols. If
you could see where they came from and what they acquired, how they preserved
themselves in life. They were beautiful, they were generous, they were kind,
they were strong. Those are my idols, I hope I’m doing them
right.
