More Evictions Planned at Venice and Lincoln Blvds.
A Brentwood developer plans to throw 30 to 40
Venetians out of their affordable housing units at 1101 through 1109 Venice
Blvd. (just east of Lincoln) in order to destroy the buildings and replace them
with 19 luxury condominiums and 48 underground parking spaces. Traffic out of
the building would flow on to a residential street, Superior Avenue, and then to
Lincoln and Venice Blvds.
This “stealth” project nearly
had a hearing without anyone knowing about it. However, Councilmember Bill
Rosendahl asked for and received a one-month postponement at the Nov. 30
hearing. The project has NOT been vetted by the Land Use & Planning
Committee (LUPC) of the neighborhood council. Many of the targeted evictees at
1101 were not even notified.
Maureen
Cotter, who was honored recently as a Venice Diva and who is facing eviction, is
attempting to organize opposition to the replacement of affordable units with
luxury condos.
The project site is just
outside the Coastal Zone and the Venice Specific Plan, making it exempt from the
requirement to provide affordable housing in the new
construction.
At press time, a date for
consideration of the project by the GRVNC’s Land Use Committee had not
been set.
