Capitalist Roaders holding Chairman Mao prisoner

The voice on the phone sounded tentative and embarrassed. “This is so-and-so. I work at Mao’s Kitchen. I’m sorry to call but my boss said to tell you that we won’t carry the Beachhead any more because it’s too political for our customers.”

I thought it was a joke at first. The only place in Venice that won’t carry the Beachhead is a fundamentalist thrift store on Lincoln Blvd. But, Mao’s Kitchen.

Is the Beachhead as threatening as those posters on the walls at Mao’s, showing the Great Helmsman leading the peasants to overthrow capitalism?

Well, yes. We are more threatening. Mao’s dead, and the Beachhead is alive and well, and hopefully leading the Venice peasants to overthrow. . . let’s see. . .greed, consumerism and conformity that infects our current day capitalist society.

But just for decency’s sake, shouldn’t the capitalist-roader who runs Mao’s Kitchen take down those posters of people in struggle, and put up something more appropriate. Perhaps he could change the name of the joint to Chiang Kai Shek's Kitchen (the leader of the anti-revolutionary forces fighting Mao).

By the way, the waitress took the Beachheads next door to the Cafe Collage where they share space with those right-wing papers from Santa Monica.
