Venice Gondolier here to stay
Venice Vanguard

1908
Francisco D’Este formerly
employed as a gondolier on the Venice canals, has returned here from Italy where
he returned two years ago during the illness of his aged father.
D’Este is an experienced gondolier
and a native of Venice, where he and his father were both employed on gondolas
practically their entire lives. D’Este said today that he could not be
satisfied with living in Italy since he had spent a number of years in this
country, especially in Venice. Captain Grant, now in charge of the boating
concession on the lagoon and canals, has employed D’Este on the
gondolas.
