The Free Venice Beachhead, our own community newspaper - and town crier - published from 1968 until the mid-90s. Now it's being revived. The Beachhead is needed more than ever to inform the community about pressing issues for Venetians, including freeway extensions, more development schemes, doings of the neighborhood council and what the powers-that-be have in store for us.

The monthly Beachhead regularly proclaimed, "This paper is a poem." And so it was. Each issue carried poetry, art, cartoons, photos, news articles, analysis, coming events and some advertising from local businesses. The combination made it a vital and artful representation of the Venice spirit.

The Beachhead has always been produced by an all-volunteer collective - no editors, no hierarchy, no bureaucracy. Participants on the collective include writers, artists, distributors, production people, etc.

Please bring your ideas, articles, poems, art, etc. It's up to the collective to decide what gets in the Beachhead. Let's try to get an issue out in early July.

Note: The Beachhead was begun in 1968 by the Venice Peace and Freedom Party. But, it always has been a newspaper for the entire Venice progressive community. And so it is again.

Venice P&F is planning a fund-raiser for July 19 at the United Methodist Church starring political satirist and singer Roy Zimmerman. We'd like to designate half the funds that are raised to go to the Beachhead. This will help fund the Beachhead until we get sufficient ad revenue (initially about $300/issue) to maintain it. For the first issue, we'll have to get contributions and loans (and some ads).
